Should I Hire a Coach? Benefits to Having your own Personal Coach/Trainer.

Hello!! Something I wanted to talk about that is constantly revolving around my mind on a bi-weekly basis is why someone would want to hire a coach. Yes, I am a personal trainer/coach, so I’m sure you’re wondering why I would feel the need to ask this so often. Great question! Mainly it is to figure out how I can be of more efficient help to people, and how I can offer more guidance and support, and in what areas might be the most beneficial. My main goal is to help as many people as I possibly can, so I am constantly trying to think like one of my clients (or potential clients) and figure out what I would personally want out of a coach. (To give more info, I did have a personal trainer for about 3 years, and have had consistent private lessons for Kung Fu/Tai Chi for the last 10 years).

If you have never had a coach or a trainer, I HIGHLY recommend getting one (and not even me necessarily, because finding a coach/trainer who specializes in what you’re looking for and who will mesh well with you is super important, and I might not be it, which is totally okay!). To make this easy to skim I listed them out (in no particular order, although they are numbered). This way for anyone who didn’t know a coach could be helpful with some of these things, now you know! And now you may be able to change your life for the better.

Something to keep in mind too is that there are SO many types of coaches/trainers, and SO many forms of training. If you don’t want to meet in person and want more independence, you can get an online trainer. You can get an online trainer who you only talk to through email, or one who does Zoom calls, or one who trains you through FaceTime, or one who trains you completely in person. There are TONS of modalities when it comes to training, so if any of these reasons speak to you, I highly recommend starting to look for someone you think would be a good fit. It is very literally, life changing.

While going through some of these benefits I feel like it is necessary to include that these are things I specifically do for my clients (if need be), so not all trainers/coaches necessarily do these, but I am positive you can always find one who does some of these, all of these, and even more.

Benefits to hiring a personal coach/trainer:

  1. They take out the guesswork when it comes to calories/macros, exercise programming and rest days, injury prevention, progress pictures/measurements/weight-checking, and various possible fitness/nutrition fallacies.

*This means you never have to wonder about when to count calories (or IF you should). You get macros calculated FOR you by someone who is qualified, and explained so you know why you’re doing what you’re doing. All of your exercises and workout days/rest days are created for you in order to get you to your goals; that means they are completely personalized and take into consideration any injuries, likes/dislikes, goals, and more. You learn about how to perfect form so you can get all the benefits you possibly can out of an exercise, and to prevent injuries and manage them if any do occur. Your coach will keep track of when to take progress pictures, measurements, or check weight based on your goals, needs, and even your cycle to make the data as accurate and as helpful as possible. AND lastly, you learn what areas of fitness and nutrition are fact, and which are fallacy, from a professional who specializes in that.

  1. You have an unbiased source to aid in knowledgeable decision-making.

*When trying to figure out what decision to make when it comes to fitness and nutrition, it can be tough to make a good one when you don’t know what questions to ask, what knowledge to obtain, and which emotions to trust. Your coach can help you with that. They are an unbiased, yet caring, source with all the information you need to guide you to the decision you want to make.

  1. You have someone cheering for you, consistently.

*A lot of the time we don’t have the energy or see the need to cheer ourselves on. We get physically and emotionally exhausted from the day, and naturally tend to look at ourselves through an unfair and biased filter. We can be really mean to ourselves. The negative voice in our head can get really loud. Sometimes we’re too tired to root for ourselves, and when that happens, you can ALWAYS rely on your trainer to shed some light on your wins, even the little ones or the sneaky ones that go unnoticed. Many of us don’t have anyone in our lives who is cheering for us. Your trainer/coach will. Always. They’re on your team.

  1. They point out progress and wins you may have never noticed had any significance before.

*We get so used to the daily battle of living our lives that we tend to turn a blind eye to progress we’re making without even realizing. Your trainer can shine a spotlight on forms of progress you may have never noticed. Like consistency, making small yet important healthy decisions, giving ourselves a gift, going a day without as much negative self talk, perfecting form in an exercise, and so, SO much more. There have been an unbelievable amount of times that I’ve praised one of my clients for something they did, and they didn’t even know something like that was a show of progress. You get to learn what to look for.

  1. All you have to do is show up.

*This goes along with your trainer taking out the guesswork; not only do they help you make decisions, but they also do a great deal of work FOR you. Like making and updating your workout program, changing and calculating your calories/macros, reminding you when to take progress pictures, and answering questions ahead of time. That means you save a HUGE amount of time by only needing to show up and do your best with your workout and nutrition. That’s all. You can leave the rest to them.

  1. You save TONS of valuable time doing things right the first time.

*There are many fad diets and ways of thinking promoted online that can have grave effects on our bodies and minds (that can sometimes take years to heal). Your coach will ensure that you are doing everything correctly, healthily, safely, and sustainably the FIRST time. You save YEARS of guesswork, trial and error, frustrations, difficulties reaching goals, pain, injury, anxiety, and more by hiring a trainer. You spend money to save time. And you gain health and longevity at the same time. Time and health, in my opinion, is worth it. All of these valuable bits of information about fitness and health, and about yourself that you’ll learn during your time with your coach is something no one can EVER take away from you. That means you learn the skills necessary to get to any goal you may have in the future, all on your own if you wanted to!

Listed above are some of the most valuable things a trainer/coach can offer, in my opinion of course, and in my clients’ opinions as well! I hope that one or more of these hit a nerve (in a positive way) and got you excited to start looking for a trainer for yourself! 😀
